Me and my hubby love to travel. I mean, who doesn’t, right? But we aren’t exactly jet-setters or financially inclined, so our adventures tend to be pretty modest for the most part. We, of course, would love to be those who travel all around the world, but at the same time, we are perfectly content just exploring when and where we can. When we travel, we love trying new things and most importantly, trying new food. Our goal every time is to find something new that we love. Some are hits, others misses but fun nonetheless.
Recently, he found a few places here in Houston, not too far from our suburb to go and try out. Even if you don’t read our thoughts on this, trust me, the pictures are worth the post scroll.
First up was Jus Mac. It is literally a mac and cheese nirvana. This isn’t your childhood Kraft pasta either. They have all kinds of different styles and flavors. As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, I am a mac and cheese aficionado (in my head), so when he told me that there was a place that served only mac and cheese, I freaked out; as sane people do.
Now, I am going to preface this with the only real “negative” that I was a bit turned off by and that was the portion size vs. price point. All options are given in either 1/2 lb personal options or 1 lb large options. 1/2 lb sounds like it should be perfectly fine, but we both got them, and to be honest, were a tad bit underwhelmed, especially considering that with our 2 drinks, 2 mac and cheese orders and our appetizer, we spent about $30. But, don’t let this deter you, it was still such a yummy experience.
To start, we ordered the Fried Bacon Mac Balls. And Oh Em Gee. They were so good. I would stop by to grab an order right now if I could. One of my comfort foods is mac and cheese balls and my hubby makes some awesome ones so I’m a bit spoiled. A lot of times, people will over-batter the balls and you end up with a small amount of mac and cheese while biting into just dough; it’s far from appealing. Here, though, they were so well prepped and made. The filling was actually filing and you could taste the bacon throughout with a perfect outside crust. It’s also served with a marinara type sauce which had a nice hint of sweet tomatoeness. Definitely a must-try.
On to the mac and cheesiness… Originally, I had wanted to get the Cheese and Chong (partly because of the pun — I’m a sucker for puns) which is: seared chicken, sauteed mushrooms & pesto topped with French’s fried onions. Does that not sound amazing??? But, alas, it was not meant to be because they were out of mushrooms. Womp Womp Womp.
I ended up choosing the Armadillo which is: bacon, cream cheese sauce & jalapenos topped w/Colby jack. It was really really good; but for anyone like me who can be a bit of a lightweight in regards to spicy food, those jalapenos will chase you every bite of the way. It was a bit overwhelming towards the end but that was because of my own personal taste buds throwing up the white flag. The cheeses were melty and gooey; the bacon was thick pieces and not like cheap bacon bits and the melted Colby, bread crumbs and bacon crumbles were great as the top seal.
Now, hubby ordered the Big Easy which is: andouille sausage, bell peppers, onions & cajun seasoning topped w/mozz. He was really happy with this one. As you can see, the cheese was just spilling over with his. He isn’t a big mac and cheese or pasta guy but was satisfied with the flavors. He said that they all worked well together as a whole and he really enjoyed it.
Overall, I’m so glad we were able to try this place out. A young girl’s dream of a place that would allow her to live off of mac and cheese, does exist.
If you live in or near Houston or decide to visit one day, check them out. They have a ton of different options and even have just classic mac and cheese if all the fancy pants extras aren’t your thing. If you try it out, let me know if you agree or tell me about the other options they have. If you happen to try one that is terrible, shield me from the pain of learning they are not all good.
Thanks for reading! ❤
*** Not sure if I have to say this, but this was NOT a paid post or anything. Just another day in our adventure-filled life that I wanted to share. 🙂
